If you have outdated medicine in your medicine cabinet, you now have a safer place to get rid of it. Vestavia Hills Police Department has provided a drop box for outdated or unused medicine.

Rates of prescription drug abuse are high and so is the number of accidental overdoses. Vestavia Hills police say a study shows that the majority of those drugs are obtained from family or friends right out of their medicine cabinets. That is why they have started putting out drop boxes at their department to urge people to drop them off here.

Officers feel if there is a place to safely get rid of the medication they just may see less cases of overdoses and misuse. It is a resource some people are ready to use.

"We're told not to flush them, not to get them into the water system. So, that probably, if it's in a convenient place, I would use it," said Mary Cobb.

While there are a number of people who are for these drop boxes, there are still some people who say they would like to see it more easily available, perhaps more locations than just the police department.
