Addiction Prevention Coalition News

Birmingham, AL., April 4, 2014 – A local organization is co-sponsoring a marijuana education forum in Montgomery this week to discuss outcomes of Colorado and other states’ marijuana laws, common myths about marijuana, and the effects of these laws on young people.  The forum will feature Kevin Sabet, PhD to give a presentation, followed by time for open discussion and questions from audience members.  Dr. Sabet is the Director of the Drug Policy Institute at the University of Florida and Assistant Professor in the College of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry.  With Patrick J. Kennedy, he is the co-founder of Project SAM (Smart Approaches to Marijuana).  Dr. Sabet recently served as the only non-medical doctor on the writing committee establishing the official position on marijuana legalization for the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM).

This event is Thursday, April 10th from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM, and is free of charge.  It will be held at the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel in downtown Montgomery.  The address is 120 Madison Avenue, Montgomery, AL 36104.  This is a great opportunity to hear more about the potential effects of marijuana legalization on the future of Alabama.

This event is sponsored by the Addiction Prevention Coalition (, the Council on Substance Abuse-NCADD (, and the Montgomery Unified Prevention Coalition (MUPS).   The vision of the Addiction Prevention Coalition is to eliminate addiction in central Alabama by providing: access to care through a regional resource directory, prevention programs in local high schools, and collaboration using the Birmingham Recovery Network.  The Addiction Prevention Coalition values best practices, community engagement, and public awareness in all areas of focus.  For more information, please visit the Addiction Prevention Coalition website or contact their director, Sandor Cheka at 205.874.8498.
