Have you ever been told that you would never amount to much and that you would never accomplish anything of significance? Jerrious heard those words all too often as he grew up struggling to deal with his serious mental illness and drug abuse. Jerrious, diagnosed as paranoid schizophrenic, was told his attention span and mental illness would prevent him from earning his high school diploma, going to college and living on his own. His drug addiction only added to his problems.

My name is Tom, I am a faithful believer in Jesus Christ and I have suffered from alcoholism. My childhood wasn’t wonderful but that does not apply to this story. I was a functional alcoholic for about 14 years. I never drank in the morning, never lost my job and never got arrested. This kept me in my alcoholism for many years.

My future husband started becoming abusive but later would be very remorseful about hurting me. I always forgave. Even though we participated in recreational drugs we still attended church and felt like we had a normal life.

I always felt like I was different from my friends. I questioned everything they believed, especially when it came to religion. My parents took me and my two siblings to church every Sunday, and they did their best to raise me in a Christian way. At the age of 13, I started the question the whole “God” thing, and began to drift away from church and my Christian friends. I was stuck in a cell after my fourth DUI – a serious felony. The judge held off the other court cases just to talk to me. We went to an old court room in the top of the courthouse that no one used anymore. He said I could either go back to my jail cell or enter a program and get some help for my addiction.

I have great memories from my childhood. Nevertheless, I became rebellious toward my family and wouldn’t listen to any of their advice. My childhood was spent in and out of foster homes. My father was a lieutenant in the Hells Angels for over 22 years. I never got to meet my mother because she left me when I was born. I guess she couldn’t handle the life style my dad lived. I started doing drugs at the age of 13, by 15 I had been in a lot of serious trouble with the law.
