One of the main verses I stand on when it comes to what God has done so far in my life is Matthew 11:28 (NLT), “Then Jesus said, ‘Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.’”
My addiction to pain medication had gotten worse in 2012 after trying to commit suicide by driving my SUV through a brick house only to have broken both my heels and learning how to walk again. This evening turned me into an IV user. I lived this way for 9 months. I grew up in a Christian family but never truly experienced a personal relationship with God. On February 14, 2013, two weeks after I lost my job and been arrested, I spent all my money to keep up with my addiction to where I became broke with no income. I was so desperate for a “fix” that I shot dirty washes straight into my veins. Within 10 minutes I was unable to breathe and too scared to call 911. The one time I did not want to die, I was close to death and I begged God to save me. Even in my sin, Jesus wanted me. I finally called 911 and was hooked up to a heart machine for five days from a bacterial infection around my heart. Once again I looked back at my life, how I had hurt my family from my anger and wanted everyone miserable around me, my lifestyle and knew I couldn’t use drugs to numb me from reality anymore. I knew deep down inside only God could release me from bondage and heal me but I didn’t know where to begin. I came to Alabama Teen Challenge April 2013 ready for a change.
Since I’ve been at Teen Challenge, I rededicated my life to Jesus. But that was only the beginning of my journey. Before any relationships could be restored, I had to restore my relationships with Jesus where He began to reveal things in me for change and healing. It was hard but just like Jesus said in Matthew 11:28 to come to Him, that’s exactly what I did. John 1 states that Jesus is the Word. I started referring back to my Bible for comfort, healing and getting to know what God says in the situations I struggled with: anger, rejection, rebellion, self-control, love, my tongue, who God says I am, how to live in holiness, handle confrontation, everything I’ve ever needed to know was right there! Now it was up to me to live it. One step at a time, God has been restoring me back to my family after 10 years of rebellion towards them.
The fact that God loves me so much that He sent Jesus to die for my sins even before I was born because He sees me for what He’s created me to do for His Kingdom and not what I’ve done in my past is indescribable. The love that I feel from Him, I can’t look back anymore but ahead for the vision and plan He has for me. Being an army brat my entire life, moving from state to state and country has been something I’ve always enjoyed so I’ve applied and just recently been accepted to Teen Challenge International’s Emerging Leader’s College to major in Bible and Theory through Global University and hopefully eventually be able to go into full-time ministry as a missionary oversees. I still have a lot of growing to do but feel ELC will teach and train me to fulfill the calling God has for me and will continue to learn. I will forever cling to the cross.
“And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.” -Philippians 1:6 (NLT).
