Recovery Stories

Loved ones are impacted by addiction whether it is a family member or a friend. Today's recovery story is from a friend's perspective.

I met Jimmy when we were in high school. He was a great guy, popular , funny and had the most contagious  laugh of anyone I have ever met.

His first experience with alcohol was "sneaking"  it from his parents. He would only drink on weekends and really never got in trouble. He continued and did not suffer from the effects until he was older and began uncontrolled drinking. He would start and and not stop for long periods of time .  I realized the severity when I went to his apartment and there were dishes that had been in the sink for days. It was a health hazard and I was worried for his welfare, but he did not try to change.

He experienced jail, accidents, (was struck on the interstate by a car), loss of employment, health issues, divorce and a degree of social isolation due to alcoholism.

When he was about 30 years old he hit bottom but somehow he was able to turn his life around and stop drinking. The amazing thing about Jimmy was that  he did this  without the help of a group or any outside source. He did it on his own ; through sheer willpower and determination. He saved his own life.

Everyone has a different method to measure success. Money, career, happiness, social status and on and on.

I think Jimmy is one of the most successful people I have ever known. He conquered the demons that most of us can not imagine and  lived the normal life we all deserve.

It is easier to cope when you  have help, but ultimately it is up to the individual and there is never a time limit on changing your life.
