Christy discusses her spiral into addiction starting at an early age and stemming from abuse. She has seen many positive changes in her life since being in recovery. Read her story today.
Addiction is ripping the heart out of countless lives and their families all across America, actually all over the globe. How do I know this? I know this because I was deep in addiction approximately 6 ½ years ago.
I don’t want to give the enemy any credit or glory, but I do want to make clear where I came from and how I was able to get free from the bondage of addiction. As I take a look back, I can remember drinking alcohol in elementary school, smoking marijuana at 12 and at 16 I tried cocaine for the first time. I continued that downward spiral using one thing to another to cope with the broken person on the inside……. ME.
As a young child, I endured a lot of physical, mental and sexual abuse. The environment I was raised in was controlled by fear so as to be kept in line. There were many lies that I believed about myself because I was told those lies quite often. Honestly, I don’t remember any positive feedback; in fact, I remember the screaming, fighting, hitting and the terrible name calling. When I was about 4 or 5 my parents split up due to the abuse inflicted on my mom; I went with her. When I was 7 one of my step fathers began molesting me and no one believed me even though my brother witnessed the abuse, so it continued for a time. After my mother went through another divorce I had to go back and live with my father where the physical and mental abuse began again. Needless to say, I began to withdraw from people at a young age --that is until I found the wrong group of people that were doing the wrong things. At that point in my life, I was seeking to be accepted and loved. I wanted to know who I was, because I didn’t have a clue. I looked for that love and acceptance in bad relationships, men, women, sex, pornography, witchcraft, Indian rituals, computers, gambling, spending money, drinking, different types of pills, needles – eventually I ended up in a full blown crack cocaine addiction where stealing, scheming and selling my body for money became the ritual to get high. I lost everything in 4 months, husband, children, executive job, house and all my material possessions went up in smoke, literally.
On March 21, 2007 I was with my buddies sitting in a filthy red van at a park in Inglenook, Alabama with a crack pipe in one hand and a lighter in the other looking for my next date and I remember thinking “I’m so tired and I just want to go to jail”. Seriously, 5 minutes later a cop pulled in behind us. Keep in mind during all that scheming I had rehearsed someone name and social security number in my head because I knew I had warrants. So when I seen the cop pull up behind us my reaction was to get out and run because I was scared but as I got out of that van I could feel that pull to run but I leaned against the van as the cop pulled his gun and other police officers began to drive up. I opened my mouth and said very quickly “My name is Christy Myers and I have warrants”!!! The officer said, well Mrs. Myers come on back here and have a seat. I was relieved – high but relieved. They searched the van and came up with nothing and I know for a fact there were drugs and paraphernalia all in that van. I was the only one going to jail that day because the Lord sent them in to rescue me; I was ready for change. He has protected me all along the way because I should be dead.
My recovery process began as I spent the next 6 months bouncing from one jail to another. While I was in jail my brother passed away and I know that this was a defining moment in my life as this was the first time I was able to cope with death without drugs. Since that time, the Lord continues to restore me and restore my family. My mom told my attorney I could only stay with her for 3 days upon my release, but the Lord changed her heart as I was able to stay 5 months, get a job and save the money to enter the Foundry. I began going to church with my mom and with a lady I met at the thrift store. After going to church with Melinda for a few months I began sharing with her that when I was 19 and pregnant with my daughter I was living at the Hanna Home when it burned to the ground but I couldn’t remember where it was located. She looked at me in amazement and told me that where we were going to church was the land where the Hanna home was when it burned down! I was in shock but knew He had brought me full circle so I could begin to grow again! Shortly after, I moved to the foundry and began to heal on a deeper level. I was actually learning to have a relationship with the Lord and learning to hear His voice instead of knowing about Him. He taught me so much about myself and He continues to teach me how to love myself. He’s restored my family - - my daughter spent 5 years in a behavioral health center after DHR took my children and they released her into my care about 2 years ago. My son was sent to his father’s house where we had no contact for over 7 years……… He found me 6 months ago and moved in with me right before Christmas! He’s given me a cleaning business and a home filled with everything I need plus some. Here’s what amazes me the most, He uses this once homeless addicted prostitute to help others - - He calls me His own - - He calls me beautiful - - He thinks good thoughts toward me - - And His love for me is unconditional.
