Recovery Stories

Jesus Christ brought me from the mouth of Hell to the gates of Heaven in the last 12 months. My story reflected in the scriptures of Romans 8:28-30 which states, “(28) and we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, have been called according to his purpose. (29) For those God foreknew He also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of His son, that He might to be the firstborn among many brothers. (30) And those He predestined, He also called; those He called, He also justified; those He justified; He also glorified.”

I had my first taste of alcohol when I was very young—around the age of 7. One year later someone at summer camp bought me my first pack of cigarettes. As I entered my teenage years, I smoked marijuana and chased after girls not knowing the path I was headed down. At the age of 18 a lot of decisions were made that greatly impacted my life: I joined the military, began studying Buddhism, and consumed heavier amounts of alcohol.

My girlfriend introduced me to methamphetamines which led to my discharge from the military after being under the influence while on watch. I was 20 years old and did not know what to do so I fell into the self destructive cycle of addiction—I drank even more heavily—resulting in my first DUI charge. I moved home, gained employment earning more than $1000 a week, and spent it all on drugs.

Tragedy struck and I was not able to cope. My father committed suicide and I became a broken man—using any type of drug I could put my hands on. I lost my job resulting in plenty of free time which I filled using drugs. I acquired a possession of a controlled substance charge as well as my second DUI, which landed me in jail. I was furious with my family because they wouldn’t bail me. Although I was still a practicing Buddhist, I entered the Alabama Teen Challenge Men’s Residential Program. I expected it to be horrible but since that first day the Lord worked on my heart, and revealed Himself to me. With Christ’s love and my supportive family, I have been transformed in ways I never thought possible.
