James McManus is Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and President of Energen Corporation. Based in Birmingham, Alabama, Energen is a diversified energy company with two lines of business. Energen’s non-regulated subsidiary, Energen Resources, is a top 20 independent oil and gas exploration and production company and contributes 85 percent of Energen’s net income. The bulk of Energen Resources 1.6 trillion cubic feet equivalent (Tcfe) of natural gas, oil and natural gas liquids reserves are in the San Juan Basin in New Mexico, the Permian Basin in West Texas and the Black Warrior Basin in Alabama. Energen Resources has approximately 1.9 Tcfe of probable and possible reserves. Energen’s regulated subsidiary, Alabama Gas Corporation, is the largest gas distributor in Alabama, serving 450,000 customers.

McManus has been with Energen since 1986 and has held numerous senior-level positions within the company. In 1997 he became President and COO of Energen Resources and, over the next decade, led the growth of the E&P company from a small niche player in coalbed methane development in Alabama to one of the top 20 independent oil and gas producers in the United States. Prior to joining Energen, he worked with Price Waterhouse Coopers.

McManus is active in a number of professional organizations. He is a member of the National Petroleum Council (NPC); member of the board and past executive committee member of the American Exploration Production Council (AXPC); director of the Gas Technology Institute (GTI); director of the American Gas Association (AGA); director of the America’s Natural Gas Alliance (ANGA); director of the U.S. Oil and Gas Association; and past director of the Independent Producers Association of America (IPAA).

In the community, McManus serves on the boards of the Birmingham Business Alliance (BBA), Business Council of Alabama (BCA), Economic Development Partnership of Alabama (EDPA), Alabama Council – Boy Scouts of America and the Alys Stephens Center. He is president of the Public Affairs Research Council of Alabama (PARCA) and chair of the executive committee. He is a member of The University of Alabama President’s Cabinet and the Board of Visitors of The University of Alabama Business Schools. McManus also is a member of the Investment Committee of the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham.

A Certified Public Accountant, McManus earned a B.S. in Accounting at The University of Alabama.
